Fire Water
This delicious beverage is a wonderful replacement for coffee - it wakes you up without the crash later on that coffee can create. Like coffee it can be very ritualistic. I’ve been making a version of this delicious beverage since 2006 - it is an ever evolving recipe. (If you see an old video of me making it you will see I used to use coconut oil but now I much prefer coconut milk).
Ease into the spices (and be aware of your mug size, your taste buds, etc).... and be sure to include the good fat*, and lemon or lime juice - these are key ingredients.
Fire water is delicious & nourishing, and I want you to LIKE it, not suffer through it!
*I prefer to use full-fat canned coconut milk, but any good fat really will work. If you live in the states and near a Whole Foods, pick up some of their 365 full-fat coconut milk cans. You can also use powdered coconut creamer, or grass-fed ghee, or whatever speaks to you.
Ingredients & How to (Basic Recipe #1):
Into a nice big ceramic mug, add the following:
fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice about half a lemon/lime should suffice
turmeric & black pepper
ginger powder
cinnamon
cayenne
a pinch of quality sea salt
2-3 teaspoons of thick, full fat coconut milk (or your choice of good fat)
top up with boiled water
stir well, with love & magic.
“Fancy Version” Recipe #2
The above is the basic recipe, but these days I add lots of other good stuff to my morning fire water, including:
hibiscus or rose powder
ashwagandha or maca or shatavari powder (adaptogens)
reishi mushroom powder
lion's mane mushroom powder
cordyceps mushroom powder
cacao nibs
tart cherry powder
goji berries on occasion (as in the photo above)
(it’s really just a good vessel for these delicious and nourishing ingredients, mine rarely looks the same twice.)
You can really play with this recipe to personalize it. You could even add a different "extra" each day to play around and see what you like best.
I absolutely love, love, love this morning hot drink and have had it almost every single day, since 2006 - even when I travel (when I make a pre-mixed batch with me).
Make this morning beverage playful & fun, tasty & ritualistic. Stir your mug of firewater your magic number of times each direction, stir in love, make wishes. While sipping, visualize and imagine it healing & nourishing your insides. And raise your mug in cheers to all your cleanse buddies.
The quantities are up to you... it really depends on your taste buds, how big your mug is etc., but I do suggest you start small and build up.
I tend to go heavier with the ginger, mushroom and turmeric powders, add a very small amount of cayenne, and middling amounts of all the other stuff... but it really is very personal (it also changes, I used to go heavy on the cayenne).
Black pepper and turmeric have a synergistic relationship - the former really helps the latter to be absorbed. Similarly, turmeric is fat soluble, so it is an important trio - turmeric, black pepper and good fat - to get the most from your turmeric.
If you are going through menopause and lean on the warm side, I recommend including hibiscus powder which is very cooling. And using just a tiny amount of cayenne (or skip it entirely).
If you make a nice chunky fire water like I do, you will probably want to keep stirring it as you drink - there are lots of nice chewy treats at the bottom.
