Tuesday - Week 1
A teacher comes, they say, when you are ready.
If you ignore its presence, it will speak to you more loudly.
But you have to be quiet to hear.”
~ Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass
Hello Lovely!
More housekeeping stuff:
Here are this week’s cliff notes.
Here is the link to our Zoom Room ~ today at 12:30 EST (5:30pm UK, 9:30am West Coast & 11:30am Central) ~ this can also be found here on our Community page.
And lastly, I have set up the WhatsApp group. When you pop in, let us know your name/location and something you would like to share about your spring dreams. (I think most of you who are interested have joined, but if not, you can use this link to join us.)
Before we begin today, let’s take a moment to get grounded and present with a few collective breaths. Allow your shoulders to drop away from your ear lobes as you invite in some sweet, nourishing conscious breaths. Adjust your posture to be tall (reaching to the light) but also soft, rooted and relaxed.
We have thus far been looking at making small but impactful changes ~ adding more plant based foods; drinking more water, designing personal morning routines; looking at the sky; incorporating joyful movement, walking outside… and all the while using all this deliciousness to crowd out ultra-processed foods, sugar & liquid sugar, bread/pasta, negative self-talk and all that doesn't really make us feel good.
Most importantly we are getting present and curious.
This is the groundwork for sprouting!
Yesterday, I suggested doing a weekly full-body scan as a way to check in with all the parts of you ~ inside and out, physical and emotional. Today, I’d love to offer a suggestion of a sweet and simple daily practice, and that is to assess your internal“weather report"!
Spring is a bit of a fickle season ~ each day looks and feels quite different. And I think WE are all like that too. While our bosses and our culture might prefer it if we were more constant and steady, as humans we are by nature, deliciously mercurial. We are like the moon, like the tides, like the seasons.
And I believe the more we tap into that and recognize that, the better we can navigate the world, and be best equipped to handle what comes our way.
These are the questions to ask of yourself to get the best forecast. (Maybe the answers land in your journal and maybe they will help you to make nourishing choices)
What’s my emotional weather like today?
How do I feel mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally?
What will I need to get through this day?
How can I balance this internal weather?
How was my sleep?
Have I had enough to eat? Have I had enough greens/protein/fiber?
Have I hydrated enough?
With this information:
Is there something I can tweak/postpone/delegate/cancel?
Is there a different outfit I can wear to help me feel more confident?
Do I need to eat something or drink some water?
These little daily check-ins are a sweet and gentle act of self-love. They help us gather information without judgement. Often (if we listen to the answers) we are reminded that a “fix” can be found in a glass of water, or is just a deep breath or good night's sleep away.
And bonus, this need only take up a few moments, and can be lumped in with something else ~ while you wait for the kettle to boil, or as you brush your teeth...
It is really akin to checking the weather forecast before leaving the house. Your personal forecast check can help you get to know your personal inner ecosystem better, which will in turn help us realize our deepest needs and help us tap back into our intuition.
In food:
What are you craving? (If your cravings are not particularly nourishing, what might you crowd that out with).
How can you creatively weave in a few more plants today? What is your fiber intake like?
Are you breaking your overnight fast with some protein?
Are you hydrating a little more than usual?
Have you tried something new?
What’s popping up at your local market or farm stand? Are you able to forage? Nettles, dandelion greens/roots, ramps, fiddleheads ~ these wild offerings are so springy and life giving. (Maybe add some green herbs to your water pitcher to inspire more hydration?)
Sit down and eat mindfully ~ whether on a park bench or your kitchen table ~ try to get a little more present. Chew slowly, savor the flavors. Visualize the nourishing energy healing you from the inside out.
Begin your day with a large tall glass of room temp or warm lemon or lime water.
"Close the kitchen" right after dinner ~ ideally a few hours before bedtime, to allow your body to rest and repair overnight. (Cleaning and flossing your teeth once you have finished eating dinner is the best way to no more snacking). Yes, a cup of herbal tea after kitchen closure is fine, but avoid honey, milk, etc.
Wait about an hour after you wake up before you eat something.
If you drink coffee: make it organic, consider adding mushroom powder and other medicine plant powders. Eat some protein and drink some water beforehand (don’t put coffee into an empty stomach).
Remember, as we step into this class gently and mindfully, we are getting reacquainted with ourselves ~ having a lovely visit with that “very special friend” we haven’t hung out with in a while, getting to know her better.
Taking all of the above into consideration, I invite you to make a few sweet commitments to yourself. You may speak them aloud or write them down (or both) ~ let them root in your heart:
I will choose to nourish, not punish myself.
I will greet this spring season with softness and curiosity.
I will practice kindness ~ to myself and others.
I will celebrate progress, not chase perfection.
I will be open to new things and lean to the light.
That's good for today my love, I wish you a beautiful day as you walk around being so sweet and kind and gentle with yourself. Hopefully see you in the zoom room.
Is this a nourishing choice?
Love, love, love,
Sacha xxx
The very first zoom room will be happening today (Tuesday) at 12:30 EST/5:30 UK ~ bring a notebook and a cuppa herbal tea and say hi to your fellow sprouters
