Primary Food
What is Primary Food?
In the holistic wellness realm, we recognize that nourishment extends way beyond what we eat. Primary Food, often referred to as Soul Food, encompasses everything that nourishes us, beyond our physical meals. It includes our relationships, careers, home environment, hobbies, spirituality, and the way we move our bodies. Think of it as "everything else that feeds us," providing essential energy and fulfillment.
Moments of Nourishment:
Reflect on times when you felt deeply alive:
In Love: When you were passionately in love, everything felt vibrant and exhilarating. You experienced intimacy and joy that made you forget about food altogether.
Childhood Play: Remember being so engaged in play that you didn’t notice when dinner was announced? Your joy and excitement were so fulfilling that hunger faded into the background.
These experiences highlight how sometimes we are nourished not by food but by the energy and emotions in our lives. Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, captures this beautifully, reminding us that "everything is food."
The Importance of Primary Food in Nourishment:
In these cleanse and nourish classes, we emphasize connecting with our Primary Food needs. Activities such as journaling, meditating, doodling, dancing, and preparing colorful, healthy meals with joy, allow us to engage with this essential nourishment. Mindfully sitting down to eat while being present for ourselves is crucial.
When we lack nourishment in these areas ~ when we feel emotionally starved ~ we often find ourselves mindlessly eating in front of an open fridge, or indulging in “comfort” foods, hoping to fill the void. However, when we nurture our Primary Food, our actual meals become secondary. We’re more likely to eat mindfully and make self-respecting choices.
Reflecting on Your Primary Food:
Primary Food Circle Exercise: Draw your own Primary Food circle (see image for inspiration) with the center representing a "zero" and the outer edge a "ten."
Rate Your Joy and Creativity: For each area of your life, place a dot on the line based on how nourished you feel. If an area needs more love, place the dot closer to the center; if you're thriving, place it nearer the outer edge.
Join the Dots: Connect the dots, just like when you were a child. This will create a visual representation of your well-being.
Analyze Your Shape: Are you balanced, or does it look like a wonky spider web? Identify which areas shine and which need more TLC. This awareness can be the first step toward positive change.
Conclusion:
By focusing on nourishing our Primary Food, we can cultivate a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Let’s celebrate and enjoy more nourishing experiences ~ bon appétit!
