Friday ~ Week 3
“There is no need to hurry. There is no need to sparkle. There is no need to be anybody but oneself.”
~ Virginia Woolf
Good morning lovely!
Happy Fri-yay! (And happy bank holiday weekend!)
To begin, let's invite some conscious nostril breathing.Stretch and twist and twirl and breathe and hum and try to get into your body and away from your thoughts. Relax your shoulders and soften those places where you hold tension... then find your feet on the earth and settle in. If thoughts come, let them. Gentle humming, omming, and bee breathing very much encouraged. Mantra: "I am safe, I am loved, I am home, all is well."
How do you feel today?
What does your internal weather feel like? Remember to notice without judgement ~ breathe and observe.
We're closing in on our last few days together so I've been thinking a lot about how best to take everything "off the mat". And it keeps coming back to the self compassion piece. There is certainly more impetus to continue making nourishing choices when there is self-love and self-respect (even self-like)!
When we started this class, I asked you to "pretend" that your best best friend in all the world was coming to stay for three weeks. And that she needed you to take really good care of her. For "her", you would prepare the loveliest, most nourishing feasts, change the bed sheets often, create a flowing clean space, bring in fresh flowers.
And last week I shared something I'd read, about swapping our body with someone we love dearly for a year... how we would most likely take immaculate care of that body, knowing we would be returning it, hopefully unscathed. What that piece might also have said was that we'd hope that same loved one would take care of OUR body with the same respect and kindness. Of course this is an abstract idea, maybe a little Freaky Friday :) But it is good to think this way sometimes ~ to use a little metaphor and imagination.
What if we showed up for ourselves in the same way we would a best friend in need, or if we were tending to the emotional and physical body of someone we love. And not just for three weeks, but daily.
That is what I hope for these classes, that they serve to remind us of our worth, and remind us that we are deserving of nice things. But also that "nice things" don't need to be shaped like faraway retreats or expensive treatments. It can be as simple as drinking more water, limiting our time online, eating more plants, and inwardly whispering: "thank you, I love you".
These things are accessible to all of us.
To spend time in self study is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. When we can observe and go inwards with curiousity, (rather than judgement or criticism), we can better understand where are reactions and responses might have originated.
This in turn might provide information helping us to respond, or react ,or choose differently. This truly crosses the gamut, from what our cravings are and how we respond to them; to decision-making of all kinds, to disagreements and how we handle those; how we respond to the stressors of this world ~ and really all manner of interactions. By gently checking in with ourselves (watching, guiding, tending, allowing...) we might connect better with our inner child (or inner elder) and find out what she really needs (99.9% of the time this is not sugar, nor social media scrolling, nor a fight). This non judgmental tending may help us to turn off the auto-pilot responses (eg: grab snack, fight back, agree to something we don't want to do, scroll phone)... and instead make nourishing choices ~ and I believe, is truly liberating.
With this in mind, it's time to organize your self-care tool-kit. Our formal time together may be gently winding down, but these last days can be some of the most potent. As in yoga, it’s often how we step off the mat that matters most. So let’s bring this time to a close with care, remaining on our own magic carpet.
For these past nearly three weeks we have been focusing on building strength across the realms of physical, emotional, mental and nutritional: ensuring our pillars are sturdy. We've been using the tools of visualization and manifestation; ritual and self enquiry to help us keep present and to understand more about what we need, individually. We have been pairing these tools with beautiful, thoughtful, mindfulness in food, movement, fresh air, hydration and good sleep.
I love the idea of a "tool kit" of self care. Much like any kind of tool kit, you may not need all the tools at once, but knowing you have what you need, when you need it, is really helpful. In this case it's a bit more conceptual, but knowing what to reach for when the needs arise can be a super game changer.
Over the years, my tool kit has taken many different shapes, but one of my favourite practices has been the idea of a “lucky dip.” This can be beautifully simple or fabulously elaborate or anywhere in between ~ but essentially the idea is to write down a collection of nourishing ideas: each on a separate slip of paper, then fold them up and place them into a jar, bowl, basket, hat ~ whatever you like. And then, on those days when you feel cranky, blue, restless, overwhelmed, or your sugar cravings are completely off the charts, you simply close your eyes, reach in, and let yourself be guided toward one small act of care.
Your lucky dip might include, but is certainly not limited to:
A kitchen disco.
A few minutes wiggling to shake it all off.
A nourishing meal.
A glass of water.
Humming, omming, bee breathing
A seasonal appreciation stroll.
Legs up the wall.
A green juice.
A cheeky mid-morning nap.
Some fermented foods.
A moment in mindful stillness.
Giggling (start with "fake giggles, it will turn real quickly).
Making funny faces.
Bouncing.
Tree hugs.
A moment to look at the sky.
Time snuggling with your pet.
Yawning and stretching simultaneously.
Sighing.
Movement snacks.
Journaling.
Five Rhythm movement.
A moment celebrating your blessings.
A conversation with someone safe.
A shower or bath by candlelight...
Lying under a weighted blanket.
Standing still barefoot.
Savasana.
(add your own ideas... allow this to be a Mary Poppins bag of goodies)
Sttart working on this idea now ~ building up your tool-kit to keep the nourishment going long after we say farewell.
I wish you a really beautiful Friday. I hope your long weekend is full of things from this list and that you walk through these next days gently and lovingly.
You are love, you are safe, you are home, all is well.
Love love love
